When life is busy fun tends to get pushed down to the bottom of the list. This is even truer when you are going through a hard time or struggling. People push fun aside to deal with whatever situation they are facing, to handle hard emotions, to get things done, or even because it seems frivolous. But fun is an important part of your wellness, and it’s easier than you think.
“When people are having actual fun, they report feeling focused and present, free from anxiety and self-criticism. They laugh and feel connected, both to other people and to their authentic selves.” – Catherine Price
During seasons of busyness or challenge, it would be helpful to feel this way. Imagine whatever you are facing right now and how you feel. Now imagine it:
- Feeling focused and present.
- With less anxiety.
- Void of self-criticism.
- With laughter.
- Feeling connected to others.
- Feeling connected to your true self.
Doesn’t that sound like the way you want to feel, especially in a hard or busy time of your life?
You may not feel like you have time or space for fun in your life, but there are simple ways you can incorporate more fun to help you feel better. It won’t necessarily fix the problem you face or change everything about how you feel. But it can help.
Here are some easy ways to incorporate more fun into your life (even when it feels impossible):
Create something.
You don’t have to be an artist to create. As people made in God’s image, you have innate creativity within you. That may be artistic or it may be in another way. Just consider things you can do that are creative. Think about different outlets, different ideas, and different ways you can create. Some ideas are:
- Doodle on a piece of paper.
- Dance to a song.
- Decorate a small area of your home like a shelf or wall.
- Rearrange your furniture.
- Paint a portrait.
- Take a photo.
- Create a social media video.
- Write a story.
- Color a coloring page.
- Fill a planter with flowers.
- Build a model or a piece of furniture.
- Work on a puzzle.
There are endless ways to create. Try something small to get started.
Play some music.
Music can change your whole mood. While there are times when quiet is good, listening to music that is upbeat and feeds your soul with positive messages is a great way to have fun. The best part about listening to music is that you can do it almost anywhere and the commitment is low.
You can play music in the car, in your kitchen, or even in the shower. Choose an uplifting song or two and hit play. You can sing along or even dance for some extra fun. And you don’t need to listen to a whole album or playlist. Even a few minutes from one song can make a big difference. Some people particularly enjoy listening to music from when they were younger.
Have more fun by noticing something beautiful.
Busy or difficult seasons often lead people to focus on the immediate needs in front of them. When you do that, while it is important, you miss out on noticing good, beautiful things. Noticing these things may seem insignificant, but it can greatly improve your mood and make life feel more fun.
You can start by noticing things right around you. That could be the little sign by your desk or that photo you love in the hall. Then you may notice how the sky looks or the sound of the wind in the trees. These simple, beautiful things that you notice will motivate you to notice more beauty around you.
As you notice the beauty around you and in your life, you are more likely to enjoy your day. This is even true of the hard days. Noticing beauty makes life more fun, and it reminds you that there are still good and beautiful things in the world.
Don’t make fun complicated.
If you start out trying to make your whole life fun or choose to do something major like take a fun trip, you will likely miss out. Life isn’t always built for grand gestures, although you will likely experience them sometimes. Instead, choose to make fun doable and consistent. That means finding small ways to incorporate fun into your life daily. The less complicated it is the more likely you are to do it.
Fun may seem frivolous, especially in whatever season you are in. If the idea of fun seems overwhelming or impossible, a counselor can help. Connect with our office to learn more about counseling and how it can help you enjoy life to the fullest.
