In its simplest form, forgiveness is letting go of anger and bitterness toward someone who has hurt you. It is learning how to replace those negative emotions with positive thoughts. Forgiveness is needed so there is no internalization of emotions that could be detrimental to a person’s mental health. Learning about forgiveness in the Bible is a great way to process forgiving those who have caused hurt and destruction.

Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you. – Ephesians 4:32, NIV

The Importance of Forgiveness

Forgiveness doesn’t mean that the event is forgotten. It has nothing to do with how the other person feels. The act of forgiveness doesn’t mean the pain doesn’t matter or that the relationship has not been affected. There are a few important reasons forgiveness is the best thing to do.

  • Forgiveness is not as much for the other person as it is for the one who is forgiving. It creates a healing process that cultivates peace and hope.
  • Forgiveness can also help in other relationships. Holding a grudge keeps a person in a constant state of frustration, which will affect other relationships.
  • Forgiveness means that a person wants to heal and move forward without the attachment of pain.
  • Forgiveness creates a healthier life. It will help with blood pressure, sleep, self-esteem, and anxiety.
  • Forgiveness can lead to restoration. Even though it is okay not to resume a relationship with the other person, restoration can bring healing, learning, and growth.
